 Aural and Theory

The Aural and Theory Department aims to:
Develop musical literacy by providing each student with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of music.

Assist the development of musical, intelligent and informed listening through a comprehensive aural training programme.

Theory Classes
All students enrolled for instrumental tuition are timetabled for a weekly, half hour, shared Theory class appropriate for their level of attainment.

Students must complete the programme of study as stipulated by ABRSM for each of the Theory Grades 1-5, preferably sitting one exam each year.

Students are exempt Theory on passing Grade 5 but those who wish to continue with their studies may do so.  Admission into an Advanced Theory class (Grades 6-8) requires the completion of the appropriate application form and is dependent on places being available.

All students entered for Associated Board exams must have passed Grade 5 Theory prior to being entered for the Grade 6 practical exam.

Aural Classes
All students enrolled for instrumental tuition are timetabled for a weekly, half hour, shared Aural class appropriate for their level of attainment.
Aural classes are compulsory for all students up to and including Grade 8.

Lesson Requirements
Students are responsible for purchasing the required Theory books and Practice Papers as directed by their tutor.

External Students
Non CBSM Students, who have their lessons elsewhere, may enrol for theory and/or aural classes, up to and including Grade 8.
