| CBSM Junior Department Since the Junior Music Centre opened in 1970, the CBSM Junior Department has continued to provide high quality musical experiences for children of primary school age. String, Wind and Brass players have the opportunity to play in one of the String or Wind groups with children of similar age and ability, whilst young singers enjoy challenging repertoire and part-singing in the JMC. The Saturday Club provides a good foundation for all these activities. Each year, the children in the Junior Department take part in concerts in important venues such as the Ulster Hall. Instrumental Lessons Lessons are available on Piano, Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Mini-Bass (Primary 4 and above); Classical Guitar, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Percussion and Drum Kit (Primary 5 and above). Students who are interested will be assessed for musical aptitude and suitability for the instrument. No previous experience is necessary. Lessons take place on a weekday afternoon and students are usually expected to attend the Junior Music Centre or one of the Junior Instrumental Groups on a Saturday morning. Piano students must have access to a piano/keyboard with full size keys and a complete 7 octave range. Orchestral instruments may be hired from the School of Music. Guitar students must have their own instrument. Aural/Theory Classes Junior students who are working towards Grade 2 or above, may apply to join a shared aural/theory class. Saturday Club (Primary 3 and 4) This is a fun session of introductory musical activities including games, singing and percussion. It is an extremely valuable experience for all children, particularly those who are going on to learn other instruments. Junior Music Centre (Primary 5-7) The Junior Music Centre aims to provide children with a stimulating introduction to music with experienced teachers in a safe, friendly environment. Children have the opportunity to explore the exciting world of music through singing, recorder and percussion. As well as singing in a choir and learning the recorder, you will have the opportunity to play African drums, hand-chimes, tuned and un-tuned percussion. We are keen to recruit children with a tuneful singing voice who are interested in developing their musical skills. Instrumental Groups Children who are learning an orchestral instrument may be interested in playing in one of our String or Wind Groups for children of primary school age which rehearse on Saturday mornings during term-time. These groups provide young players with the opportunity of playing a wide range of interesting music and making friends with students from other schools. Children from any school are welcome to apply.
